What's the difference between gold vermeil vs gold plated jewelry? There are two main differences. First of all, gold vermeil is always a layer of gold on fine or sterling silver, whereas "gold plated" means it's a layer of gold on a metal, but make sure you read the fine print, because it can be a layer of told on anything, from copper or brass, to low-end base metal. Secondly, gold vermeil must have a thickness of gold layer that is at least 2.5microns thick, whereas "gold plated" doesn't have any restrictions on the thickness of the gold--most of the time, it will be less than 2.5 microns, which is why gold vermeil jewelry is usually more expensive than gold plated jewelry.
